Our (Not So) Big Fat Greek Vacation

Greece has ALWAYS been a dream vacation for me since I can remember. The crystal blue water, the white buildings, the food, the culture… I could go on. So when it came time to making plans for our first vacation after Casey got back from training, Mykonos, Greece was a no-brainer! We had some time off coming up in early May and that, my friends, was the perfect time to go.

We chose Mykonos mainly because it was the cheapest option to fly into and we had non-stop flights from Germany. But really any place in Greece would have been amazing to see! Since we had so little time there (about 4 days), we chose to stay on the island for the whole trip.

Day 1

We arrived into Mykonos at about 1300 and the weather was perfect that day. After checking into our adorable hotel, Hotel Spanelis, we immediately changed into our bathing suits and headed to Agios Sostis beach. We rented an ATV and were on our way. I highly recommend this as your means of transportation around the island. It’s super affordable and a great way to see all the sights when you are going from place to place.

View of Agios Sostis from Kikis Tavern

We spent the afternoon enjoying the views and soaking up the sun. There was a highly recommended Greek restaurant right there by the beach that we went to for dinner called, Kiki’s Tavern. And oh my gosh it did not disappoint! This used to be a little “hole in the wall” restaurant that only the locals knew about. But after the tourists caught wind, it has now grown so popular that you can expect an hour or so wait. Don’t worry though, the owner provides free wine while you wait and the view is fantastic. The food and atmosphere make it well worth it!

Day 2

Unfortunately, we had some rain come in in the morning. This is highly unusual for this time of year in Mykonos. We had a boat tour planned, but it was cancelled (total bummer!) so we decided to explore the town instead. The small alleyways in the town center are so charming and adorable! You can’t help but stop to take a picture after every corner you turn. It’s just like how you imagined it, but better!

The rain eventually cleared after lunch, so off we went again to explore another beach, Kapari Beach. This beach is more “hidden” and takes a bit of exploring to find. Our friends had told us about it and I am so glad they did. Easily the prettiest beach I have ever been to! It requires a little climbing to get down to, so if you have small kiddos or anyone that can’t get around easily, I wouldn’t recommend this beach.

With another wonderful beach day in the books, we decided to go out for cocktails in the evening. Casey found a cute little cocktail bar named, Alley. The bartender was fantastic and each drink he made was delicious!

Day 3

Archeological Ruins at Delos Island

On our final full day in Mykonos, we decided to explore the archeological ruins on a small island called Delos. You can take a 20-25 minute ferry ride over to the island from the city. You have to pay a small entry fee to explore the island also. Once on the island, I recommend taking the path that takes you up a small mountain. It’s quite a ways up there, but the views are breathtaking and make the climb worth it! I recommend wearing good walking shoes for this! I did not and suffered because of it. Beauty is pain right? You could easily spend your whole day here. Two hours was good enough for us though as we had more exploring to do and food to eat!

Our delicious dinner at Compass restaurant, YUM!

We ended our day by stopping by a great poolside bar at the Cavo Tagoo hotel. It was here that I had the most delicious Greek salad of my entire trip! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And once again… the views! Can’t get enough. We just sipped on our cocktails acting like we could really afford to stay at a place like this. After our little appetizer and pre-dinner drinks here, we went to Compass Restaurant and stuffed our faces with the best local seafood and delicious wine!

Our sunset view at dinner at Compass.

Day 4

We luckily had a flight leaving in the early afternoon so we had time in the morning. We decided to relax and enjoy our last breakfast at the hotel (The Greek yogurt was my FAVE!) and reminisce on the past couple of days.

Greece was just as dreamy and breathtaking as I believed it would be! This country has topped our list of favorite vacation spots. Casey and I are already planning our next trip back to explore some of the smaller islands. If you ever get the opportunity to go, you won’t be let down!
