Why you should visit Wroclaw, Poland this Christmas

For most people, Poland isn’t always at the top of their travel list when heading to Europe. I can honestly say that it wasn’t even on my list when we moved abroad. But after living in Europe for just over 2.5 years, I have grown to love visiting those countries that don’t get talked about often. They tend to surprise me the most and in the best way!

Late November, we ventured off to Wroclaw to check out their Christmas market and to get a little taste of the country. Here are my top reasons to visit the small town of Wroclaw this Christmas.

The Charm

This market is located right in the middle of the city at Wrocław’s market square and stretches down each of the little side streets. They are lined with beautifully decorated huts and food stands selling handmade goodies and trinkets that are perfect for gifts.

There is just something so special about the architecture here as well. I love everything about the unique roof lines and colorful buildings that line the whole square. The Christmas lights reflect off the sides and it just adds the perfect backdrop for a picture.

The Size

This market is one of Poland’s largest Christmas markets. Everywhere you turn there is a new street that has yet to be explored. We took our time stopping at each little stand.

The Prices

I have always heard that Poland has some good prices and that is definitely correct. I was in awe at how cheap I could get things for, food inlcuded! And particularly items I have seen in Germany for double the price. They don’t sacrifice on quality either. So if you are looking for a good place to shop that doesn’t break the bank, head here!

The Food

I really wanted to visit one of Poland’s markets because I love seeing how different countries do them. It’s important to me to try the local food and to really immerse myself in the culture and traditions.

They have some local food items like kielbasa sausages and sauerkraut, pierogis, and sheep cheese from the mountains. But they also have some other food items like doner kebap, chimney cakes, ginger bread and more!

The Drinks

Just like every Christmas market you have ever been to, they have hot beverages. They have hot mulled wine (my personal fave), hot chocolate, apple punch, and more. The hot mulled wine (or Glühwein in Germany) is offered in many different flavors, including a Wroclaw one that includes a shot of Amaretto. Yum!

We enjoyed sipping on these in their two-story pop up buildings where you can either stand inside to get warm or head to the balconies for the ultimate view of the lights around the square. (Also perfect for people watching.)

So if you aren’t convinced to visit by now for the Christmas market, just know Wroclaw is a fantastic city! You don’t have to visit during the holidays to fall in love, but it certainly adds that extra bit of charm. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and made some of the best memories on this trip!
